Three local students have raised over $5,700 to help support youth programming in Carrot River.
They were competing in the 2023 Carrot River Young Women’s Club’s festival challenge.
Teanna Wiens was crowned the winner as she ended up raising the most funds. As a prize, whe was given the opportunity to donate $250 to a charity of her choice which ended up being KidSport.
Member at large Marie Wiens told northeastNOW without community support, events like this wouldn’t be possible.
“We appreciate them going out and putting themselves out there and appreciate the entire community for supporting us.
The festival challenge has a long history in the community evolving from the May Queen festival to the Festival Queen and now has become gender inclusive which allows for a Festival King to be crowned.
Marie explained that although the club is called Young Women’s Club they support any youth projects, groups, and activities in the community.
“We also will support groups or organizations in the community that need funds for something. They can send us a letter and depending on funding available, hopefully support them.”
The club was originally formed in 1956 and currently has 11 members between the ages of 19 and 40. The club is currently seeking an additional member.
