After being shutout on Friday night against the Flin Flon Bombers, the Melfort Mustangs are into the win column on the SJHL season after a 5-1 victory over the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Saturday night.
Aidyn Hutchinson was one of five different Mustangs to score in the contest and said it was nice to get the monkey off the back in his second game with the team.
“Felt really good after a tough loss last night,” Hutchinson said. “But we bounced back and played hard tonight so it was a good one.”
Aidan Wildeman’s first career SJHL goal got the Mustangs on the board in the first period, while Leith Olafson would add another for an early Mustangs lead through one period.
Clarke Huxley made it 3-0 five minutes into the second period before La Ronge got one back. But just three minutes after La Ronge cut the lead to two, Hutchinson’s first as a Mustang made it 4-1.
Melfort would lock it down after that and add an empty netter in the third period to take the 5-1 decision.
Hutchinson and Huxley assisted on each other’s goals in the game and the chemistry between the former AJHL teammates is obvious.
“We played together for, I don’t know, half a year,” Hutchinson said. “We’ve got some good chemistry, so thankfully it’s showing out there.”
Joel Favreau stopped 18 of 19 shots he saw in the game for his first win of the season.
Melfort is back at it on Friday when they host Humboldt.
