Big Brothers Big Sisters Humboldt (BBBS) just completed their Bowling for Kid’s Sake fundraiser, which raised money and awareness for the organization.
Despite restrictions and mandates, the community gathered together to raise $12,000 with all proceeds raised going towards programming to help children find their perfect mentor.
While the previous year had seen more fundraising, BBBS Humboldt Development Coordinator Jodie Hergott wants to thank the community for coming together.
“We’re down from last year but we really appreciate everybody’s efforts this year.”
This year due to the pandemic they added the option to bowl virtually. Many organizations and teachers took this as an opportunity for an afternoon of fun.
“We’re blessed enough to have nine local classrooms bowl virtually in the comfort of their classrooms and on a tablet or device of their own.”
The Humboldt Co-op donated party bags containing a beverage and some snacks to enjoy while they bowl.
All who participated in the event were invited to dress up and raise funds with several organizations in friendly competition with each other to see who could raise the most money.
The financial institutions trophy was awarded to Conexus Humboldt who raised over $400, the agriculture dealers trophy went to Hergott Farm Equipment who helped raise over $500, the vehicle dealerships trophy was given to Discovery Ford Sales Ltd after they raised over $800 and the school trophy was won by St. Augustine School whose students raised over $3,500.
Hergott hopes to spread the message that events like these are not just about raising money.
“It’s also to bring awareness to the power of mentoring and as well as the importance of mentoring in our community, and we still have a waitlist of 14 children.”
Mentors are needed to help children in the Humboldt area, some of whom have been on a waiting list for a mentor for over two years.
“For just a couple of hours a month, you can change the life of a child. It’s really that simple.”
