Ben Tompkins, the voice of the Melfort Mustangs
Ben’s love for sports broadcasting began when he was just five years old, as he used to wake up an extra hour early for school, just so he could watch the entire morning SportsCentre cast to begin his day.
Immediately following his high school graduation, Ben was off to NAIT (Northern Alberta of Institute and Technology) in Edmonton for the two-year Radio and Television program. His studies included a four-month internship at CKPG-TV in Prince George (also Pattison Media) where he was able to provide on-air sports reports and even sit on the desk as “the sports guy” for the 5 o’clock newscast.
Ben turned that internship into a full-time job in Melfort at CJVR, Beach Radio, and northeastNOW, where he has spent the last three years as the sports and news guy. Upon arrival in Saskatchewan, Ben immediately became as involved as possible with the Mustangs, calling games on Hockey TV (now Flo Hockey) and doing colour commentating on radio broadcasts when available.
In the last year, the native of Sylvan Lake, Alberta has become the radio play-by-play broadcaster for the Mustangs, which included calls for Melfort’s SJHL Championship and Silver Medal at the 2024 Centennial Cup.
Ben’s other highlights include being one of the voices for the 2023 SJHL Showcase in Warman and providing content for HuskieFAN when possible.
He will continue to call Mustangs games on the airwaves this coming season, as Melfort aims to defend their title.
