The Humboldt Broncos picked up some big points this past week, against teams very close to them in the playoff race.
A very important piece of their success was the play of 2004-born forward Maddox Amaral.
First, the Broncos earned a 5-2 win over the Flin Flon Bombers on Thursday in Humboldt, before splitting a home-and-home series against the Melfort Mustangs.
Against the Stangs on Friday, Amaral first appeared on the score sheet with an assist, however, it came in an 8-4 loss.
He and his squad would then get their revenge on Saturday, however, when the Komoka, Ont., product scored twice while adding a helper, in a 6-2 win.
His four points in three games played, earned him the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s (SJHL) Directwest Rookie of the Week award.
It also gave his club four out of a possible six points, in a three-day stretch.
To this point of the season, Amaral now has eight goals and seven assists in 26 games, which is good for 14th in rookie scoring.
The Broncos will be back in action on Wednesday, against the visiting Kindersley Klippers, before they play a two-game set against the league-leading and division rivals Battlefords North Stars, on Friday and Saturday.
Humboldt currently holds a record of 23-11-1-0 through 35 games, which is good for 47 points.
That places them fourth in league standings (three points ahead of sixth and just two points behind second), and second in their division.
