Games are being cancelled across the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), but one home and home set will go ahead as the Melfort Mustangs take on the Flin Flon Bombers.
The Mustangs are currently in the midst of a four-game winning streak after a Saturday night overtime win over the Humboldt Broncos. Even with a number of key pieces out of the lineup due to a number of factors, the Mustangs have still managed to grind out some wins. That’s thanks in part to a lot of younger players getting more opportunities, and shining in that opportunity.
Leading scorer Zac Somers says it’s nice to see the rookies get their chance in bigger spots.
“It’s good to see them stepping in and ultimately getting the job done,” Somers said.
Meanwhile, the last time the Mustangs lost a game, was against the Flin Flon Bombers back on Nov. 2. It was a hard-fought 2-1 game, and it was the Bombers’ second win against Melfort this season after a 2-0 win in Flin Flon to open the season.
“They’re beatable,” Somers said. “It’s going to take a team effort for a full sixty [minutes] and lots of grit, and speed is the way we go at them.”
Melfort is currently sixth in the SJHL with an 11-8-4-0 record, while the Bombers are tied for second in the SJHL with a 15-5-2-1 record.
The Sherwood Division rivals will meet in Melfort on Friday, then the series will shift to Flin Flon on Saturday.
Saturday night’s game can be heard on 105 CJVR with the pre-game show at 7:15 p.m.
