This week marks not only Rotary Week but the Rotary Club of Melfort’s 75th anniversary and they are looking back at what it means to be a Rotarian.
At a council meeting on June 13, the City of Melfort declared June 20 to 27 Rotary Week.
The festivities kicked off with a Rotary Flag raising at city hall in recognition of the contributions the Rotary Club had both made and will continue to make.
The club welcomed a new member on Wednesday night bringing the total to 29 members.
Until June 28, the club is giving all supporters the chance to win up to $2,500 with their 50/50 draw. All proceeds go to funding future projects that the Rotary Club hosts.
The club will also be helping with the upcoming Canada Day celebrations, where Rotarians get a chance to show off their barbecuing skills.
Rotary helps with various clubs and projects in the Northeast such as the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity and Northeast Outreach and Support Services.
Chair of Public Relations, Gailmarie Anderson told northeastNOW all Rotarians abide by the same guiding principle.
“So the main model of Rotary International is service above self. And that’s what we’re all about. We’re here to help our community.”
For those interested in becoming a Rotarian, the process is open to all who want to make a difference in the community.
“If we find that someone is interested, we bring them along to a few meetings,” Anderson explained. “So they get to know what Rotary is about, who is involved and then we just have a conversation about their goals and aspirations so that we are sure that they align with with with the principles of Rotary.”
All members of Rotary need to accept a new member of the club prior to them becoming an official Rotarian.
Anderson said she hopes that everyone will reach out and get involved in helping the Northeast flourish.
“For 75 years, we have been helping out our community. One of the main reasons why it’s good for the community to know about Rotary is that so that they can ask for our help.”
