Sarcan and PLUS Industries in Melfort is all about ‘Inclusion, Respect, Quality of Life for All.’
PLUS Industries is a non-profit organization providing services for adults with intellectual disabilities.
• In the 1960’s, Saskatchewan Mental Health Services worked with communities to establish White Cross Centers providing community support and rehabilitation services.
• By the 1970’s, the White Cross Center evolved into a center for the intellectually disabled and eventually became the Melfort Activity Center.
• The facility on Hamilton Avenue West opened in 1981. The Saskatchewan Association of Rehabilitation Centers (SARC) became a work place giving clients a greater sense of dignity and self-esteem – becoming PLUS Industries Incorporated.
• Expansion of services and facilities continued into the 90s and 2000s including the purchase of the Clift Building on Main Street in Melfort… one of the oldest on Main Street… and the development of the retail outlet, PLUS Stuff Junction.
• PLUS Industries continues to be operated by a volunteer board of directors, supporting 60 participants in varied programs.
Sarcan / PLUS Industries offer a work environment for people with various levels of intellectual disabilities by providing day programs, a supported work environment, and multiple recreational / social programs on site and in the community. They also run group homes for adults to live and thrive – helping them become independent members of the community and a greater sense of dignity and self-esteem. That’s what helps make this community so great.
