Let’s talk Bats!
While I was attempting to open the station door this morning, I heard this high pitch clicking sound. Now instantly my mind got the best of me, and I thought I was in the middle of some horror movie. Looking to the left there was nothing and fearing for the worst when I looked to the right there was nothing there. Then something caught my eye, up higher on this vent thing that is on the outside of the station. Slowly this bat slides down and continues to munch on it’s early morning snack. The next task was to try and get into the station as I was worried that my newfound friend would come in with me. However, all worked out and the bat remained outside.
I think Bats are honestly a misunderstood creature of the night. They help by consuming a variety of insects, some of which are important agricultural and forestry pests. The type of Bats that we have in Canada eat insects, but there are some that eat nectar, fish, and smaller mammals. While there are Bats that feast on blood, we don’t have to worry about that as they aren’t found in Canada (breathing a sigh of relief)
Unfortunately, the Bat population in Canada is depleting and researchers are trying to figure out why. There are some things you can do to help revive the population, and it can be a simple as offering water, food and a safe space to sleep. Find out all the details by clicking here.
