A familiar face is joining the Melfort Mustangs office.
Mat Barrett, who has been the voice of the junior hockey team for the past three seasons, has been named the marketing and business director.
“I’m getting myself familiar with everything that goes on here behind the scenes that I didn’t know about before, but the first couple days here have been good,” Barrett said. “I am looking forward to the next little while here as we get closer to a new season.”
Barrett grew up in Edmonton, Alta. but came to Melfort just over four years ago for his first job in the radio industry as a reporter, as well as the play-by-play announcer.
“Knowing the team, the board, and the community helps a lot with transitioning into the operations here,” Barrett said. “I encourage all the businesses to reach out to me and let me know what they are hoping to see this year.”
Barrett is working on sponsorship and ticket details ahead of the regular season that gets underway on Sept. 24.
The support from the community on moving into the new role has been great according to Barrett.
“Hearing that there are so many people behind me and that think I can do this job as well is an honour,” Barrett said. “We are such a community-based organization and when the community is behind you, it makes everything a lot easier.”
A call is also being made for billets for the upcoming season.
“We aren’t quite sure on exact numbers but anyone that might be interested in helping should reach out,” Barrett said. “We need our boys to have places to lay their heads at the end of the day.”
With training camp right around the corner, permanent and temporary billets are needed. Temporary billeting is encouraged for those who are on the fence about billeting to see what it’s like and if billeting would be a good fit for them and their home.
For more information on billeting, call Lydia at 306-921-5669 or Tara at 306-921-9423.
