The Good Food Box program will still be available in the region but will switch hands from Plus Industries to North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS).
On a monthly basis, members place their order from different box choices that include fresh fruit and vegetables.
Exectuive Director Louise Schweitzer told northeastNOW the program makes buying produce more affordable.
“Best of all, you get to care about yourself and your family and it helps to ensure you get some essential vitamins and minerals into your diet at a reduced cost,” Schweitzer said.
The program has been in the community for over 20 years and has operated out of Plus Industries for 16 years. The Good Food boxes are administered out of Tisdale by The Tisdale and Area Community Action Cooperative.
Boxes are available for pick-up in the northeast communities of Melfort, Naicam, Pleasantdale, and St. Brieux. There are volunteers that will bring the boxes out to the different communities as well as taking orders each month.
“It’s also a good way to sometimes try a new fruit or vegetable and have those staples in your home all the time,” Schweitzer said. “Potatoes, carrots and onions are staples in the boxes as well.”
The boxes are a good way for households with limited incomes to purchase fresh produce but the program is open to anyone to use.
“Everyone could use a savings on fruit and vegetables,” Schweitzer said. “With recent increases it is more vital that we make people aware that it is here.”
Boxes range from $15 to $25 depending on family sizes and the larger boxes also include grain products.
Call the NEOSS office at 306-752-9464 for Melfort orders or to be directed to another community partner.
“It is all on a month-to-month basis, so if you order one month, you don’t have to order for another month or two months,” Schweitzer said. “You can always change box sizes too if you know you might need more or less from one month to another.”
Brochures are available through NEOSS and feedback on the program is always welcomed.
